Science, passion and faith
茖W(xué)是什么?
Science is generally thought to be serious endeavor with little emotion involved . Yet in my experience, you don't last long on the bumpy road of science without strong passion or faith in your pursuit. Why do we do science? Why do we punish ourselves with long hours on the bench and repeated failures? I believe that as humans we are innately driven to make sense of the world around of us. Thus lie in our brain the primitive drive to find the answers to the unknown. We scientists, just like everyone else, observe first and then try to make sense of what we see. What differs us from lay people is that we believe answers to the unknown are logic, can be discovered and tested with careful designed experiments. Through the process of elimination, with each failure we are also one step closer to the truth. Technical skills may greatly facilitate our pursuit, but in the end it is the strong faith in the existence of logic and definite answers to our questions that serves as the internal compass that guides us through the road to discovery.
